报告摘要:

The new era in earth observation from satellite has empowered us to comprehend ecological processes from space. One of the most important ecological processes is photosynthesis, wherein plants utilize sunlight to synthesize CO2 and water into sugar. This process not only removes CO2 from the atmosphere but also provides essential calories for human consumption. However, quantifying photosynthesis is a big challenge, which leads to uncertainties in estimating land carbon sink and crop production. This talk aims to introduce a comprehensive understanding of how photosynthesis respond to diverse environmental conditions across various scales (canopy, regional, continental, and global). This understanding will enhance predictions of the trajectory of ecosystems under climate change, consequently informing climate adaptation strategies to optimize carbon absorption by forests and bolster the productivity of croplands.

The talk will focus on the intricate connections between photosynthesis, air quality, and water quantity. I will discuss (i) the potential of cutting-edge satellite technique known as Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF) in tracking photosynthesis and crop yield, (ii) the impact of air quality on photosynthesis and crop production, and (iii) strategies for managing irrigation to ensure food security and promote climate justice. The presentation will span ecological processes across multiple scales, ranging from a mechanistic understanding to the development of climate adaptation strategies.
