报告摘要:Nepal is one of the most enthusiastic and strategic participants of the Himalayan BRI projects. Even though BRI encounters the unique Himalayan terrains and materialities that require sophisticated engineering, financial investment and working with diverse social and political situations, the entry of Nepal into BRI has already transformed the Nepal’s development imagination and the future of the country. The Himalayan BRI, however, has also created a new frontier of geopolitical collision. But in Nepal, BRI infrastructures are seen as a ‘national liberation’ opportunity. In this lecture, I will show how the BRI has created a new national imaginary of prosperity in Nepal and in what ways it has transformed the developmental path of the country, even before BRI projects are actually implemented. I argue that BRI has not only displaced the ‘developmentalism’ cultivated by western donors for decades in Nepal, but it has also transformed the Himalayan geopolitical economy, generating a new logics of power in the Himalayan landscapes.
