摘 要: Tourism serves as a potent tool for poverty alleviation, yet its effectiveness hinges on the preservation of robust ecological environments. As a prominent player in the global tourism industry, China experiences substantial internal tourism mobility. The environmental costs of trans-eastern tourism mobility in China, particularly their potential impacts on the vulnerable western ecological regions, have yet to be thoroughly investigated. This study aims to delineate a path of Chinese tourism development that harmonizes environmental costs and economic benefits. Employing a conditional beta-convergence model, this study reveals the role of tourism in fostering balanced East-West economic growth in China. To further elucidate the environmental impacts of economic development spurred by tourism, we propose the integration of Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSAs) into a multiregional input-output (MRIO) framework and expand environmental account including water quantity, water quality, and carbon emissions, spanning from 2008 to 2017. Our findings indicate that water resource depletion is the most prominent environmental cost, with a significant consumption of 191.99 m3 per 10,000 yuan of GDP, followed by substantial wastewater discharges and CO2 emissions. The environmental degradation induced by trans-eastern China is characterized by regional and sectoral disparities, with pollution predominantly emanating from the eastern coastal regions. The transport sector emerges as the most impactful contributor to environmental degradation in Western China. This study suggests emphasizing the reduction of water usage in the visitor travel lifecycle, the adoption of green transportation practices, and a focus on eastern coastal regions of transeastern tourism in China.
