报告题目The fluid mechanics of surface-atmosphere interaction

  报告人Li  Dan

报告人简介 Dr. Dan Li is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University. He received his Bachelor degree in Hydraulic Engineering in 2009 from Tsinghua University and his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2013 from Princeton University. Before joining BU, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate in the Program of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at Princeton University and as a visiting scientist in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.

The importance of surface-atmosphere interaction (e.g., land-atmosphere interaction and air-sea interaction) is rarely disputed. However, our understanding of these interacting processes remains to be advanced. In this presentation, I will talk about surface-atmosphere interaction from the perspective of fluid mechanics. In particular, I will focus on two important concepts: the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory and the roughness length, which are the foundation for nearly all parameterizations of surface-atmosphere interaction in numerical models. The universality of Monin-Obukhov similarity functions and the scaling of thermal roughness length with respect to the Reynolds number will be discussed.
